The word “además” is one of the most frequent connectors in Spanish. Technically, it is categorized as an adverb.

1. Meaning and Use of “Además”
“Además” expresses the addition of a new element to something (an idea, an argument, a series of things…).
“Además” can be translated in English as:
- In addition,
It is frequent to place a period right before “además” and a comma right after it, although it doesn’t always happen.
El hotel es precioso. Además, tiene una piscina increíble. = The hotel is very beautiful. Also (in addition) it has an incredible swimming pool.
Voy a contar lo que hice. Además, quiero explicar mis motivos = I’m going to talk about what I did. Moreover (furthermore) I want to explain my reasons.
Es muy caro y además no me gusta = It’s very expensive and besides I don’t like it.
2. Meaning and Use of “Además de…”
“Además de…” can be translated in English as:
- “In addition to (something)”
- “As well as (something)”
- “Besides (something)”
As we can see, “Además de…” always works as a unit with something that come immediately after. That’s the reason why we never place a comma right after “además de”, because we still need something to complete the unit.
Nuestra universidad tiene edificios muy modernos además de buenos profesores. = Our university has very modern buildings as well as good teachers.
Además de ser guapa, eres inteligentísima. = In addition to (besides) being pretty, you are extremely intelligent.
