To talk about the use of an object, we can choose one of these expressions:

ser para… = to be (used) for…
servir para… = to be (used) for…

¿Para qué es el bolígrafo? El bolígrafo es para escribir.
What is the pen for? The pen is for writing.
¿Para qué son las gafas? Las gafas son para ver bien.
What are glasses for? Glasses are for seeing well.
¿Para qué sirve una sierra? Una sierra sirve para cortar madera.
What is a saw used for? A saw is used to cut wood.
¿Para qué sirven los móviles? Los móviles sirven para muchas cosas, por ejemplo para llamar a alguien.
What are cell phones for? Cell phones are used for many things, for example to call someone.
